4 Easy Ways Add Creativity into Your Home This Year

printable art for kidsI get asked all the time, “How are your kids so creative and imaginative?” Of course, it helps that their mama is an artist—but here’s the thing: you don’t need a studio or fancy supplies to turn your home into a space that invites daily creativity. I truly believe this! Over the years we’ve built simple, everyday invitations into our routine to create right into— and trust me, it’s changed everything. You can do it, too. Here are four no‑fuss, super easy ideas that have worked wonders for us with 7 kids under our roof!

Here are 4 ways to easily add creativity into your home:

1. Carve out a mini “Art Station”

You don’t need a whole room—just a tiny corner. In our small, cozy living room, a simple side table holds two baskets: one for paper, one for colored pencils. That’s it! When my kids spot it, they know, “Hey, art time.”

Tip: Keep it styled—add a sweet placemat or art print on the wall next to it so it feels special (and matches your home decor).

2. Use your recycling bin for craft supplies

Listen, mama: we don’t have time to search through every craft store and our shelves are already overflowing with enough stuff, am I right!? Instead, show your crew how to turn cereal boxes into dollhouses, toilet‑paper rolls into musical instruments, or paper plates into royal crowns. And to make it easier, make yourself a "found-objects" basket to throw stuff into on the days the kids need to find something to create with.

What to save in your “found‑objects” basket:

  • Cardboard (cereal boxes, shipping scraps)

  • Toilet‑paper & paper‑towel tubes

  • Old magazines & fabric scraps

  • Spare jars, string, even plastic cups

You’ll watch their eyes light up when they realize, “We can make ANYTHING!” And I really have seen my kids make just about anything from things we've found around our house. It's just as entertaining for me to watch what they create as it is for them to make with their own hands!

3. Let them redecorate—yes, really!

Kids love to feel like grown‑ups, right? Giving them a say in their space sparks real pride and creativity. In their rooms we’ve moved furniture around, painted an accent wall with chalkboard paint, and even hung their artwork in a DIY gallery.

Just last week, my oldest and her two younger siblings co‑designed their shared room—color choices, pillow swaps, the whole thing. And t’s now their favorite spot in the house.

4. Put “Creative Date Night” on the calendar

As mamas, we all know our schedules can fill up fast and wonder where time went. Without carving out moments like this for intentionality it's easy to let it slip by quickly. So Here's my solution: block it out like a real appointment-- because it is! Whether it’s 15 minutes before dinner or a half‑hour on Saturday morning, make it official: “Creative Time with Mama.”

  • Set a reminder: Title it something fun, like “Art Time”

  • Keep it simple: Grab some blank paper or coloring pages, make gift tags or a paper chain, paint with q-tips, make mini‑cards. The simpler the activity sometimes the better!

  • Celebrate: Snap a photo of your masterpiece so you always have the memory of it even if the real papers get thrown away.
